Your rates seem really low. Is there something wrong with Smoky Mountain Tower?
We’ve kept our rates low on purpose, because we’d rather have more nights booked at lower rates than to have Smoky Mountain Tower be empty. We don’t charge for any extras like cleaning or registration fees. As for there being something wrong, we invite you to read our guest book comments. We are confident that Smoky Mountain Tower is one of the best values in the whole Gatlinburg area, and we challenge you to prove us wrong!
Tell us a little about yourselves.
We are Dave and Phyllis Baseler. We’ve been married for just over 50 years. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren. For most of our marriage, Phyllis has been a stay-at-home wife and mother. She is the glue that has held our home together. Dave spent more than 30 years in broadcasting and marketing, retiring in 1998 from ServiceMaster. We’ve lived in Detroit, Chicago and Memphis.
In 2000, we moved to a small town in North Carolina to help manage Hickory Cove Bible Camp (www.HickoryCove.org). That turned out to be more than a full-time job for both of us. So in 2004, we went through our second retirement – only to be thrust into service as the US Director for a mission organization in Pennsylvania. We’ve now “retired” from that responsibility. We’re still active at Camp and in our local church. Our children are in Chicago, Nashville and Charlotte, so we travel a lot to be with them and our grandchildren. Dave serves on several other non-profit boards and still consults with mostly Christian organizations in the areas of branding and identity. He also does specialized Board training for non-profit organizations.
How are you able to rent the cabin when you don’t live in Gatlinburg?
First, we have local people lined up to provide cleaning, security and maintenance services. We can easily stay in touch with them by phone and e-mail. Secondly, we have discovered that more rental cabin owners are working this way. Thirdly, we’re part of a group of about 60 people who “rent by owner.” So we’ve got the flexibility and backup we need to provide you with a quality vacation.
With all your other activities, how are you able to manage the rentals?
This is one of the best parts of our program. Two of our daughters provide us with great help. Marcia handles reservations and keeps the calendars current. Angie does Web site support and handles special projects for us. The “back end” work – cleaning, maintenance, and security – is done by several people in Gatlinburg. We’re in constant communication with all these people by phone and e-mail. And we typically make 4-5 trips a year to Gatlinburg to check on everything and work with our support people.
What if I don’t want to make my reservation online?
We understand, although we have never had our website or our reservation website compromised. But if you prefer, you can call us (usually either Marcia or Dave) during normal business hours. We can take all your information over the phone, even though that is much less secure than booking online. The number is 865-325-9888.
Why don’t you have an 800 number?
Two reasons. We’re trying to keep costs down so we can keep prices down. Secondly, we find that so many people have cell phones or unlimited calling plans today that long-distance calling is usually not an issue. If it is for you, call us and we’ll call you right back!
I’ve seen “Smokies Rent Direct” on some of your material. What is that?
We started out with two rental cabins and used that name to cover both of them. Then we found out we could get the “Smoky Mountain Tower” Web address. So we developed a Web site just for this property. Our other cabin – All Decked Out – is featured on our Smokies Rent Direct Web site. You can find the information at www.SmokiesRentDirect.com/All-Decked-Out. We also use “Smokies Rent Direct” as our business name for tax purposes.
